Design Thinking for Innovation

This year, I am excited to be teaching a Grade 8 and 9 Design Thinking for Innovation course at our Kowloon East Campus. In The Science of Human Creativity, Sawyer (2012) notes that “Genius. Invention. Talent. And, of course, creativity…describe the highest level of human performance”. With this in mind, course development and planning will ensure the course is both rigorous and rewarding. Students enrolled in my course should expect to be challenged, to push their limits, to dream and embrace the “Not Yet” mindset!

Design Thinking is a process which uses a collection of mindsets that allows us to identify problems, dream up big possibilities, and create and test a practical, hands-on solution. Design Thinking combines analytical and creative thinking into a solution minded process which is built on the principle of iterative prototyping as a means of problem solving designed around a product or process.  Empathy with people, persona building, and people cantered solutions set Design Thinking apart from other creative thinking toolsets. However, the design outcome must also represent a successful balance between business needs, technology, people desires and needs and environmental factors (Curedale, 2012).



Design Thinking is a helpful process teachers use to create meaningful, connected learning tasks. It is an equally powerful method for students that connects their learning to the world around them. Mastering the principles of Design Thinking is essential for any individual interesting in engineering, computer programming, business development, entrepreneurship, crafts person, designer, and/or any process driven innovative occupation which does not yet exist.

Dream Big! If you feel challenged remember the “not yet” principle and add continue trying.
